I’ve gotten through the first four chapters of T.M. Luhrmann’s book When God Talks Back and it has been quite a helpful read. It seems that although Luhrmann’s goal was to explain the “evangelical relationship with God,” her unvarnished treatment of the practices and thoughts of the people in the churches she studied actually exposes what I would consider the serious problems with “renewalist” evangelicalism.
So far the book has tipped me off to the deficiencies of the gospel preached in such churches (which I would argue is so deficient it is a false gospel), the mystical influence on their thinking and more. I’m reading and taking plenty of notes and will definitely be writing about this in the future.
