Don’t Miss List 7.17.13

I have a lot to share this morning with  all of you. There is a wide range of topics, from atheism to contemplative spirituality, to a personal story from someone in the signs and wonders movement. I’ve also include a podcast from a couple weeks ago with a very useful explanation of the differences between the Abrahamic  and the Mosaic covenants. A huge distinction and one that some people out there are missing and it’s messing up their theology.

New ‘Religion-Free’ Bible Strips Christianity

Stand up for the Truth has further proof that some unbelievers are not only content to ignore Christianity, but find it necessary create their own false version. Like the atheist church and atheism monument, this really just leaves me puzzled.

SUFT writes, “The Religion-Free Bible Project’s mission statement says it “exists to empower people to transform themselves, their relationship to the world, the divine and the experience of life by recreating the Bible and revealing its profound message for all humankind.  The creation of the Religion-Free Bible is meant to be a project ‘of the people, for the people, and by the people.’”  As opposed to God’s Holy Spirit-breathed Word. (2 Timothy 3:16).”

Todd Bentley gets 34,000 people ‘saved’ in one week without the gospel

A bit of a tongue-in-cheek headline from Michael Acidri at Twisted Crown of Thorns, but an important spotlight on Todd Bentley and what is missing from his revivals (I’ll give you one guess…). Fair warning, the video is disturbing. I actually couldn’t watch it all the way through because it made me feel sick.

Deceiving signs and wonders: Corissa’s story

Related to the last headline, and also from SUFT. Corissa came out of the signs and wonders movement, having followed Bentley and many other hyper-charismatic and prosperity “gospel” types.

Corissa said after she began realizing the deception she’d been in: “I’ll admit, I didn’t want to believe it at first. I prayed to God. I kicked and screamed and cried, “do I have to give up my precious experiences?” I pleaded with God. I didn’t want to let go, but the truth was cracking the foundation upon which this lie stood on. It took weeks for this all to sink in. I read the Bible more, I sought out teachings, and inside felt like a part of me was dying with each blow of truth. It was like someone picked up a rock and threw it at the mirror which shattered the reflection that I had been staring at. It was all just an illusion.

Cincinnati Christian University and Seminary added to contemplative list

If you are considering college or seminary it’s important to know which ones are involeed in contemplative spirituality. Lighthouse Trails Research tracks this and keeps a complete list. Sadly, they just added Cincinnati Christian University. If you are unfamiliar with spiritual formation/contemplative spirituality and the implicit dangers I highly recommend reading any of Ray Yungen’s books on the subject (they are available from Lighthouse Trails as well).

Confessions of a (Recovering) Motormouth

From Today’s Christian Woman magazine, a personal take on talking to much and learned when to speak and when not to. Something I know I can use some work on.

Understanding Biblical Covenants

Pirate Christian (Chris Rosebrough) did an episode of Fighting for the Faith about this on July 1. If you haven’t listened to it yet, I definitely recommend it. The time devoted to explaining the different covenants is huge, and has been misunderstood by some. Misunderstanding this leads to people trying to live under the Mosaic covenant (law), rather than the Abrahamic covenant (grace by faith). BIG difference. Check it out. Just don’t listen to the William Tapley update at the beginning of the program while driving. I was laughing so hard I cried and couldn’t see and was worried I was going to get into a car accident.
